Why Investing in a Career Coach is an Investment in Yourself
When Oli first came to me, he introduced himself as a "Jack of all trades, master of none" - and even warned me, "I’ll probably be your hardest challenge yet."
Challenge accepted.
Through some gentle questioning (don’t worry, we’re not talking police interrogation tactics here - just good, curious coaching), it became clear what was really going on. Oli didn’t believe he had the confidence to get a higher-paying job. He didn’t know how his varied experiences could transfer into something new, and he wasn’t even sure which parts of his career he actually enjoyed anymore. At that point, I knew, this wasn’t going to be a challenge at all. This is exactly the kind of work I love doing.
Helping people discover their strengths, build their confidence, and get clarity on what’s next is the heart of what I do. It’s the foundation of The Discovery Program, part of The Career Remote — a step-by-step framework designed to put you back in control of your career path.
We got to work:
Vision First: Where did he ultimately want to be? What did success look like for him, outside of anyone else’s expectations?
Skills and Loves: What skills did he have, what tasks did he enjoy, and (just as importantly) what work drained him? Sometimes, people can’t even hear themselves — it actually took me saying, "You’ve lit up talking about this!" for him to realise where his real passion lay. That’s the benefit of having a neutral, outside perspective. I’m not a family member with my own ideas for your life. I’m here to hold up a mirror — no judgment, just clarity.
Confidence Building: We worked on how to present himself to recruiters and potential employers, building not just the practical tools but also the self-belief behind them.
LinkedIn and Online Presence: We tackled the 'LinkedIn ick' and made sure his online profile reflected the professional story he wanted to tell. I like to call this 'climbing cringe mountain.'
Strategic Networking: We mapped out who he needed to connect with, instead of relying on random applications and wishful thinking.
Interview Prep: We practiced interview techniques that swapped nerves and self-doubt for positive enthusiasm, focusing on why he wasn’t a hiring risk, he was an asset. We made sure he knew his worth, and that he could confidently ask for the salary he deserved.
The result? Oli landed a new job with a different company, on a better salary, doing work he genuinely enjoyed.
It turns out my "biggest challenge" wasn’t a challenge at all. It was simply about following a proven process, trusting in it, and trusting in himself.
